During the making of Denis Villeneuve’s (beautiful, brilliant) film adaptations of Dune, Greig Fraser, the director of photography, kept an extensive visual record of the filming, capturing intimate moments with the cast and crew.
Josh Brolin, who plays Gurney Halleck, added his poetry and his recollections to these extraordinary images, giving a rare insight into the films with this gorgeous book.

“/…/ But many of Frank Herbert’s dreams did come true, including the tremendous success of his great novel Dune after a rocky start in which it was rejected by more than twenty publishers. Then in 1983 at Churubusco Studios in Mexico City, near the site of the 1968 Olympic Games, he clicked the clapboard to start the cameras rolling on the initial Dune movie, and he got to keep the clapboard from the first take of the first scene.
My father would have enjoyed seeing Greig Fraser’s evocative photographs from the set of the new Dune movies, and reading Josh Brolin’s inspired poetry. Now, through Greig and Josh’s eyes, we see a new interpretation of the filmmaking experience and my father’s magnificent universe.
Brian Herbert, Seattle, July 2023.”
